Dermal fillers are a form of cosmetic treatment used to remove wrinkles, skin folds and sagging, usually on the face. It is an especially useful treatment concerning the mouth and lower half of the face, where such issues occur more often and where natural occurrence of the body’s own “dermal fillers” depletes most readily.
The body naturally uses a substance known as hyaluronic acid to improve the skin’s appearance, making it more elastic and retaining water beneath the surface to “fill out” the face, giving the face a youthful fullness. As we age, this acid naturally decreases in the skin, resulting in slow, inevitable loss of volume, particularly around our mouths and cheeks. Eventually, this means skin folds and wrinkles – unless something is done about it.
That’s where dermal fillers come in. The vast majority of commercially available dermal fillers are made with naturally biodegradable hyaluronic acid gel, simply replacing the body’s own supply. Teosyal® provides a variety of these fillers, all of which are manufactured in Switzerland by award-winning cosmetics company Teoxane. Please note, none of these products are of animal origin.
Teoxane offers a wide variety of products that can replace the body’s own levels of hyaluronic acid, creating a much more youthful face and seemingly turning back the clock, restoring lost tone and fullness in a way that is long-lasting and safe. It is most suitable for use treating things like the lines between the nose and mouth, which often wrinkle and lose their suppleness with time, or the smile lines in the cheeks, which can also suffer greatly from a loss of hyaluronic acid.
However, the potential for dermal fillers doesn’t stop with reversing the effects of ageing – they can also be used to provide a plumper, more full appearance, or provide contouring and volume in the cheeks and lips.
Dermal filler treatment at Liverpool Osteopaths takes around half an hour, and the results can be seen straight away. An extremely fine needle is used to inject the filler no deeper than the dermis level, just below the skin, and since the Teosyal® filler has a local anaesthetic in it as part of the treatment package, the injections are painless and cause very little discomfort. In order to make sure the procedure is as comfortable as possible, a local anaesthetic cream is also used to numb the immediate area before the treatment goes ahead.
It is possible for people to experience some discomfort in the treated area after treatment – some symptoms like light swelling or bruising, itching or redness may occur, but this is normal, and will usually disappear after a couple of days.
Dermal fillers are not a permanent cosmetic treatment, as the hyaluronic acid is eventually broken down by the body the same way it would break down its own acids over time. However, the fillers will still last anywhere between six and nine months, and the absolute bare minimum recovery time is needed before you can get straight back to your busy life!
Before you can receive your dermal filler treatment at Liverpool Osteopaths, you will need to attend a thorough consultation with our Nurse Practitioner or the prescribing physician, who can discuss your concerns, goals and aims with the procedure and plan your treatment accordingly.
